研究 Areas for Marine Affairs 专业

The field of 海洋科学 is as broad 和 diverse as the vast oceans that cover most of our planet. At UNE we touch upon all facets of marine science with special focuses in the following areas of research.

APPLIED MARINE TECHNOLOGY

Applied marine technology is a crucial Marine Programs research area that cuts across all others. 机器人, 研究血管, remote 和 autonomous underwater vehicles, environmental monitoring, 和 modeling are all vital tools that enable modern marine research to occur. 研究ers in this area are interested in innovations in 和 novel applications for marine technology.

A shining example of this is our association with Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO). AALSO members are those behind the scenes at research institutions 和 large public aquariums around the world who design, 构造, 和 maintain large aquatic husb和ry systems. AALSO provides professional credentialing 和 proficiency certifications that carry real weight in the industry. UNE is one of only two academic institutions who have been approved by AALSO to administer these tests to our students.

The oceans cover more than 70% of the planet. The interconnectivity of life 和 ecosystems in the sea are incredibly complex, 并且与陆地和大气有着明显的联系. Such complexity is nearly impossible to underst和 without the powerful predictive capacities of computer models. 这些模型, based on data collected in the field, 从卫星, the geological record, 和其他地方, are used to forecast (和 hind-cast) everything from fish populations 和 food webs to ocean circulation, 飓风, 和 climate change.

Smart Technology

Ocean robotics 和 smart technology — in the form of underwater drones, manned submersibles, water quality sensors, oceanographic buoys, 和 camera systems — is a rapidly growing, 和 increasingly important marine field. In the age of technology, these tools are becoming vital components in enabling cutting-edge marine research across the board.

Biology of Marine Organisms

This research area is very broad 和 ranges from marine genetics to the migration patterns of large animals like sharks, 海豹, 和鲸鱼. 从海藻到鲨鱼——浮游生物到鳍足类动物(海豹)!) our team covers it all.

Food Web Dynamics

Marine organisms are adept at hitching rides in ballast water of ships, through hitchhiking on marine debris, or even through deliberate introduction. 研究ers at UNE study these organisms 和 their ecological interactions 和 impacts in the Gulf of 缅因州 及以后.

Frederich, Ph.D.

Marine Invertebrates

There are more than 20,地球上有超过1000种海洋和淡水硬骨鱼, while mollusks alone (snails, 双壳类, 等.) comprise more than 85,000 known species. With so much diversity, the opportunities for research in marine invertebrates are almost inexhaustible.

By virtue of being immersed in water, they are at the mercy of the tides, 电流, 化学, 和 geology of the sea. 海洋学 is the study of these physical properties 和 processes in the ocean — physical, 化学, 和地质. 海洋学 researchers at UNE study how these oceanographic components interact with each other 和 affect life in the sea.

Microbes

With few exceptions, marine microbes 和 plankton form the base of the marine food web. 研究ers within our Marine programs study many facets of the biology, 生态, 甚至是这些重要而多样的生物的化学成分.

Marine Mammals

UNE researchers study the biology 和 生态 of sharks 和 marine mammals in the Gulf of 缅因州 和 across the globe.

Food from the Ocean

到2050年,全球人口将达到100亿, underst和ing the interactions between the ocean 和 what we eat is more important than ever. We have robust research 和 education programs in this focus area including fisheries science 和 管理, ecological aquaculture, marine entrepreneurship, migration of highly migratory species, 和 food web 生态.

渔业 science 和 管理 are both distinct disciplines that are highly interwoven. At UNE, we have researchers with expertise on both sides of this important coin.

Farady

Ornamental Aquaculture

在全球范围内, the saltwater ornamental fish 和 aquarium industry is valued at $15 billion, 导致进口超过400种鱼类. 然而,, only 10% of these fish are cultured.

Aquaculture

The global human population is projected to be more than 10 billion people by 2050. That is a lot of mouths to feed. 然而,, 而海洋覆盖了地球的70%以上, only 2% of food production (including all fisheries 和 ocean farms) comes from the sea. In the future there will be by necessity, increased pressure on global oceans to produce food. 研究ers in our Marine programs study the entire suite of issues pertaining to seafood 和 aquaculture.

Human Impacts on the Ocean

Evidence of human impact on the ocean is everywhere, not just limited to our coastal oceans. Plastics 和 化学s have been documented from the deepest depths of the global seas, 而气候变化影响着海洋的方方面面. More 和更多的, we cannot separate studying the natural ocean environment apart from human influence. 渔业, 塑料微粒, 政策, 污染, 保护, 和 restoration all fall into this category. UNE Marine Programs faculty, professional staff, 和 students are focused on research 和 solutions across the spectrum of human influence on our seas.

Our climate is changing — rapidly. 它的影响遍及我们的星球, especially our oceans, which play crucial roles in mediating, 缓和, 塑造加速的地球变化对全球的影响. This is exemplified in our own backyard, where the Gulf of 缅因州 is warming faster than 90% of all other ocean waters. Rather than a discrete area of study, climate change research at UNE Marine Programs is more of an umbrella.

Restoration

Not all human impacts on the sea are negative. Ecosystem 和 habitat restoration, invasive species mitigation 和 管理 和 ocean advocacy are all part of UNE Marine Programs.

Entrepreneurship

Opportunities here include sustainable fisheries 和 aquaculture ventures, 海洋机器人, sensors 和 remote sensing, 航运, value-added marine-derived products such as cosmetics 和 nutraceuticals, even textiles 和 fashion.

The ocean is downstream of everything 和 given a long enough period of time, everything ends up in the ocean. 海洋污染通过多种途径和多种形式影响我们的海洋:营养过剩以及城市和农业用地的径流, bacteria from our wastewater, 化学s from our industries, 和 plastics from, 好吧, everywhere…are just a few examples. 研究ers in our Marine programs look into how the pollutants impact marine organisms 和 ecosystems, as 好吧 as techniques to mitigate 和 policies to prevent 污染 from entering the ocean.
